The Antagonists
Everybody has enemies. Some enemies want to make you suffer. Some enemies want to destroy you. Some enemies want to defile your body and carve out your still-beating heart for the fun of it while you die screaming. Here are some of the people who the PCs consider antagonists:
The Church of the Traveler
The Church of the Traveler is supposed to be a church that looks after the wanderers of the world, and helps protect those who need help. In practice, it has become a religion that focuses mostly on its own self-interests. Many of its priests and Masters are corrupt and corrupted, and most have forgotten the source of much of their power to the point that it has shunned them. Those who still retain magical power are thus either to be trusted or feared…
Master Savannte
Master of the Auregone Spire, Savannte is suspected to be responsible for the assassination attempt and subsequent invasion attempt of Hallevince by forces unknown. He has been at best aloof to the Prophet's existence despite encountering her once.
Master Ophenon
Master of the Bridgeroot Spire, Ophenon is a secretive man who prefers to keep tight control over the territory in his borders. When Scott attempted to borrow some of the electronic devices from his territory, he had him hunted down by Templars with the intention of killing him in addition to recovering the ill-gotten technology. (In truth, he succeeded, but some people don't stay dead forever…)
Leon Calavante
A child of Master Calavante of Highpeak near the Impact Mountains, Leon is a Shadow who has apparently gone rogue to serve the Church's interests. He was briefly seen in the company of the Master of Graalmeet, but departed his company during the Master's unfortunate demise at the hands of the party. His present location is unknown.
The Roadwardens
While some Roadwardens are still good, many of those who patrol the roads are more like cutpurses and brigands than patrollers and guards. They often make life more difficult for travellers by extorting payment for safe passage 'with the blessing of the Traveler'.
The Keepers
Many of the Keepers of the Church have gone into seclusion … or, perhaps, been removed from the public eye. It's unclear how deeply the corruption runs within the Keepers, but they are one of the few female-accepted orders left within the Church's hierarchy.
The Templars
If the Roadwardens are the police of the Reach, the Templars are the army. Mobilized with cavalry, infantry, reconnaissance and specialist groups, the Templars are called upon to quash possible rebellions, and they aren't kind about it, burning villages, executing citizens in slow and cruel ways, and crushing any who dare to oppose the might of the Church. Still, there are worse aspects to the Church…
The Inquisitors
The Inquisitors are armed with powerful magics and near-unlimited power to persecute unbelievers and heretics, and are sent in to purge places that have fallen under the sway of 'evil', often working alongside the Templars to bring 'errant' citizens to justice. They are quite fond of torturing people into confessions, often to the point of death and well beyond, using their magics to keep their victims trapped and suffering. The Inquisitors manufacture the magical crystals the Reach uses to power many of their Old-World technological devices, and maintains a generous collection of such technology for their own use, which they guard with the jealousy of an escaped convict.
The Guild
The Church has offered 10,000 gold pieces to the group who successfully murders the Prophet of the Traveler, which has resulted in many interested parties taking up such a contract. While some have suffered unfortunate fates before they could get close enough, it's only a matter of time before others pick up the trail. As the characters continue to become a thorn in the Church's side, it's also only a matter of time before the others have similar bounties on their heads…
The Traveler's Reach
While the Traveler's Reach is technically a democratic republic, in practice it's a feudal theocracy, with most elected officials and ruling houses having been put there with the sponsorship and backing of the Church, and strong opponents of the Church quietly destroyed. Interestingly, at least one noble house, the ruling house of Rosanegra, has chosen to break ties with the Church and support the growing separatist movement.
The Earthbloods
Who or what are the Earthbloods? They are beings in the shape of men and women, seemingly made from an acidic mud that burns those they touch, and are damnably hard to disperse. It is difficult to damage them with physical attacks (and they melt most materials including stone and metal, although not clay or brick), and they are also significantly resistant to magical effects and seem to have no mind to affect with charms or similar magics. Water is a known weakness, however.
The Symbol of the Choking Vines
What was that strange symbol found hidden in the house of the dark Master of Graalmeet? And what does it mean for the future?
