Civilian Job - Assistant
Official Assignment
Job Type: Civilian
Access: Maintenance
Responsibilities: Become familiar with station operations; ask for a personnel assignment from the Head of Personnel or volunteer to help a department.
Unfortunately, all major staffing positions have been filled by more motivated or qualified individuals at this time. You are currently assigned as an Assistant - your job is to assist other crewmembers in the performance of their duties. Consider this an internship and an opportunity to learn important job skills that you can transfer to future opportunities within Arcturus Technologies! Of course, Assistants who prove their motivation and merit can apply to the Head of Personnel or to the Captain for a job transfer to a specific department or role within the station.
As you are responsible for assisting in basic maintenance tasks throughout the facility, you are given access to maintenance corridors as well as normal non-secured areas. Secured areas must be opened for you by another crewmember or the friendly station AI, if one is installed. Take this opportunity to explore and learn the layout of our Maxwell design so that future assignments will be performed with greater efficiency!
Your only responsibility is to assist other crewmembers with their duties when asked. If nobody presently needs assistance, we recommend exploring the station, spending time in the Cafeteria or Bar, or learning from other station crew. You are supplied with a radio headset which you can use to communicate with public channels; make use of this to report unusual sightings, find work to help with, and generally help this outpost be a productive station!
Advice and Information
Assistants begin in Primary Tool Storage and have Maintenance access only. Stations may have an infinite number of assistants (limited only by reasonable space requirements), and the role of assistant serves as a good position to learn the ropes of the game.
The Head of Personnel can grant more access to an Assistant's ID card and/or change their job title so they can assume greater responsibilities, if they deem them worthy. Being an assistant also gives you the opportunity to take on unusual job roles not usually part of the crew complement. Some sample ideas:
Title | Responsibility |
---|---|
Acolyte | Assist the Chaplain |
Actor | Provide entertainment, perform in the theater. |
Animal Handler | Corral animals. |
Athlete | Practice sports, exercise |

Note, however, that an Assistant has one thing most people don't have - a semblance of anonymity. The combination of low expectations and an ever-present and numerous job title means that many people may simply pay no attention to you.
