While the dictionary definition of 'smith' might imply a person who forges metal into crafted goods, a Smith in 22nd century parlance is an anonymous agent - a John Smith, as it were - who is looking to hire people for work. This work might be legal but not the sort of thing that can be obtained through normal channels, illegal and the sort of thing they'd prefer not to get their hands bloody with, or somewhere in between. For some reason, females in this capacity are often referred to as 'Jane Does' instead.
