Musical Malice

Briefing

I'm assigning the Reeling office to look into a local concern that's been attracting a lot of attention from the community - a series of 'concert vampire killings' occurring at the performances of a band calling themselves the 'Van Helsings'. You may have already heard about the murders in the news, but we feel you should be brought up to speed if you are to investigate this matter properly.

The Van Helsings are getting added publicity during their latest tour. On September 18th at Nassau County Coliseum, audience member Janet Dill collapsed during the performance. When she didn't regain consciousness, paramedics were called in. Dill was found to be drained of blood; when two puncture marks were found on her neck and the papers got hold of it, the media immediately dubbed it a 'vampire killing'.

As you may know, it didn't end there. Five more identical deaths have occurred in four separate cities, each at a Van Helsings concert, and each with the same M.O. - victims drained nearly completely of blood. All witnesses have claimed they saw no attack; the authorities are stumped.

Worse, the killings are actually increasing the band's drawing power. The entire tour is officially sold out and scalper's prices begin at $500 for standing-room-only. Up in Philly, a few of the crazies in the audience actually cheered when they heard someone had just died. So we have a vampire who kills at will, and who has sparked an ugly trend that needs to be stopped.

We don't have any direct evidence that the Van Helsings are involved, and they've publicly expressed their regret in light of the deaths. However, there is an obvious link, even if an innocent one, to the murders.

Their next performance is scheduled at Pittsburgh's Civic Arena in three days. I've already arranged plane tickets for your crew to Pittsburgh, and have arranged to put you in contact with a sympathetic reporter by the name of Carolyn Devonn who is following the murder cases. She has offered to provide press access to the concert in exchange for your protection during her investigations and during her interview with Jimmy Whiteout, a former vocalist with the band. Do try to remain on her good side.
