Background Summary

“Fu– umm, I mean, gosh!”

Vito Marchese runs Marchese Body and Motor, on the outskirts of town, and is an honest businessman. Naturally, in Jersey, this means that his business doubles as a Mafia chop-shop, and his income is significantly larger than one would expect based on his outward appearance and age. Vito is friendly and talkative and remembers his customers by name and vehicle. He seems to be about thirty years old and occasionally mentions his tour of duty in the 8th Air Force as a gunner in a B-17 bomber.

Mindset

Vito's job in the war was that of a very aggressive defender and he still retains a lot of that mentality. He understands that Nica is a little different and pushes her to fit in as well as she can. However, if anyone tried to cause harm to her person or reputation, Vito would put a stop to it.

As far as politics go, Vito is fatigued with thinking about it. He's an American above all else, hates Communism (though a few of the Ruskies he met in the war seemed like decent folks), and has the occasional nightmare about the Bomb.

Quirks

The adrenalin rush of flying and combat left Vito feeling kind of flat when he got home. He bought a motorcycle and uses that as his primary transportation, and wears leather gear to guard against road rash. He's a little too old to be the Wild One but he hasn't been able to settle into the sedan-and-picket-fence ideal of the age.

Housing

The top floor above the auto-body shop is a two-bedroom apartment with an eat-in kitchenette and a small living room. The apartment is less cluttered than it was before Nica arrived, but there is still the occasional bucket of auto parts soaking in degreaser stashed behind potted plants and under tables. The apartment smells like petroleum products, tobacco smoke, Italian spices and Brylcream.

Business

Marchese's Texaco, Body and Motor has two gas pumps out front and two bays with lifts inside. There is a small retail area with a Coke machine and a rack of snacks, near the register. There is a pay phone in a wooden booth outside, by the door. Behind the shop itself is a half-acre of vehicle corpses in various stages of decay, surrounded by a chain link fence topped with barbed wire and guarded by Killer, a young Doberman.

Once or twice a week, a truck will arrive with wrecks, which are unloaded, and newly-repaired vehicles are loaded up for transport elsewhere. Vito employs Eric Lancaster, a Limey mechanic who kept Vito's plane in the air far longer than anyone thought possible, and Nica runs the cash register as needed.

Equipment

Colt model 1911 .45 pistol, and 2 boxes .45 ammunition, standard rounds Switchblade knife Straight razor Shotgun, 12 gauge, sawed-off, and 2 boxes buckshot rounds Indian Chief (motorcycle), in very good repair, 1947 model Saddlebag containing: First aid kit, half-pint of whiskey, box of matches, several books, two cigars in wrappers, notebook, pen, flashlight, lockpicks, basic toolkit Automotive workshop, with full complement of power tools, fluids and lubricants and two heavy-duty lifts
