Background Summary
Quentin Tasset was born the fifth child of a farming family, and like all the children, grew up working on his parents' farm. Unlike his brothers and sister, Quen disliked farm life and spent more time daydreaming and listening to radio shows. He loved The Shadow, and Outer Limits, and other such mysterious broadcasts especially.
Never a popular child, Quen began to daydream about an alter ego - Captain Mystery. He'd be brave and adventurous, and save the day. He'd be everybody's friend. Unfortunately for him, when he tried to 'save the day' at school, his classmates were less than impressed. So was his teacher. They had a talk with his parents. A long talk.
His father thought more work was the answer. He gave Quen more chores and responsibilities around the farm so he'd have less time for daydreaming. His mother was more sympathetic. She said that perhaps what Quen needed was a chance of pace, and sent him off to live with her parents. Grandma and Grandpa Johanson were thrilled to have their grandson with them. They encouraged his adventurous mind, but tried to direct it in a practical way - encouraging him to read books, and to consider going to college for radio broacasting.
By the time Quen got out of college (it took him a little longer than the standard four years, due to some daydreaming and grand adventures), there was a new media on the scene – television! One of the friends he had made in college was working for a local station in Pleasantdale. Quen pitched an idea for a show – Captain Mystery's Strange Theater. It would feature Quen as Captain Mystery, telling stories of the strange and supernatural that would be dramatized by a repertory cast of actors.
PDTV loved the idea – but with one correction. They wanted Captain Mystery to not just narrate the stories, but to often be part of the action. And since they didn't have the budget for a stunt double, this included doing his own stunts. Desperate to realize his childhood dream, Quen agreed – a fact that he sometimes regrets as he's called upon to jump out of flaming buildings and battle fierce creatures.
