Artifacts and Crafts

The Artifacts and Crafts franchise is, if the stories are true, operated by paladins of the goddess of technology and innovation, Mekista Tinkerfingers, and as such, doubles as a temple to the goddess. Within its walls are stylized circles of circuitry (the goddess's holy symbol), and many technological items that are otherwise generally rare in the less technologically advanced sections of the world. This describes a typical Outlet Store as might be found in a major city; for the Home Office, check the relevant page.

Items

The following items are always available at Artifacts and Crafts Outlet Stores:

Phones, Upgrades, and Attachments

Item Cost Description
Soulphone - Basic 100 gp The soulphone is a magical analogue to our modern cell phone, capable of receiving and sending text, voice, and video messages; writing letters; accessing the ATTN Store to download games and apps using one's Bank of Alshira account; accessing maps of Arcydea; and the ability to make a Technology + Intelligence skill check to research information on the NexusNet, as well as use it to browse various business and personal pages. Phones are available in gold, silver, white, black, red, yellow, orange, green, blue, or purple exterior colors; for more customization, consider a phone case. The Basic Soulphone has 10 units of Power.
Soulphone - Cheap 25 gp Sometimes you really just need a basic phone without extra fancy apps and data packages. This cheap phone cannot take any Soulphone Upgrades or additional Apps except Remote Blast, but when it comes to peace of mind, this phone is priceless. It has 5 units of Power.
Soulphone - Expensive 250 gp This fast soulphone is shinier and better than the basic soulphone, allowing it to handle multiple applications simultaneously. Battery life is also extended to 20 units of Power.
Soulphone Upgrade: Adventurer 250 gp This soulphone upgrade, performed at an Outlet Store, gives your soulphone additional beneficial features:
* You can mark specific people who also own this upgrade in your Contacts list as Companions, Friends, Providers, or whatever else you might like.
* You can message these people via NetChat silently, causing the device to vibrate very quietly, without having to configure the device to do so.
* You can choose to make the current location of their phone appear on your map if they have Location Sharing turned on.
* Your map software is upgraded to provide basic automapping functionality inside structures, buildings, and dungeons. It is not perfect and will experience errors in enchanted locations, particularly those with changing architecture, but is better than writing by hand.
Soulphone Upgrade: Emergency Exit 500 gp This soulphone upgrade, performed at an Outlet Store, gives your Soulphone an important feature: you can choose to trigger an emergency teleport that will return you to the last ATTN portal you ventured through. This only works in areas where ATTN signal is strong; areas of weak signal may or may not work. You can also set the device to immediately transport you to a House of Healing when you fall unconscious due to injury; however, this will remove you from your companions and thus require you to find your own way back to them. Using this feature significantly drains the phone's battery (2 units of Power within Arcydea, 5 units of Power elsewhere).
Soulphone Upgrade: Remote Blast 50 gp This soulphone upgrade, performed at an Outlet Store, gives you the ability to target an item or creature within 60 feet (or fire in a direction) and launch a Remote Blast, a burst of magic that inflicts 1d6 force damage and counts as a ranged spell attack using Intelligence as the attribute. This costs 1 unit of Power per use.
Soulphone Upgrade: Mystic Focus 50 gp This soulphone upgrade, performed at an Outlet Store, allows the phone to channel magic from the user, operating as an arcane, divine, druidic, etc focus as necessary. To use the device as a focus, one must be holding the device in hand.
Soulphone Upgrade: Telepathic Access Functions 500 gp This soulphone upgrade, performed at an Outlet Store, gives your Soulphone the ability to telepathically communicate with and listen to you, whether you have telepathy normally; if you do not, it has a range of 30 feet, and if you do, double normal ranges to a minimum of 30 feet. Some games or applications require telepathic access functions, while others are made significantly easier (allowing control of the phone as a free action rather than a Use Item action.)
Soulphone Upgrade: Remote Portal Access 2000 gp This soulphone upgrade, performed at an Outlet Store, allows you to teleport (yourself to a limit of 300 lbs; you can extend this limit by 100 lbs, to a maximum of 600 lbs, by paying an additional 2000 gp and submitting the phone for augmentations for one day per increase) to any public portal on the ATTN network; there is a database of public access points which is connected to the Map application. Using this feature significantly drains the phone's battery (5 points of Power within Arcydea, 10 points elsewhere).
Soulphone Upgrade: Instaportal 2000 gp This soulphone upgrade, performed at an Outlet Store, allows you to open a two yard wide portal which leads to the grounds of the Academy or wherever your Home Location is currently set. It remains open for one round (at a cost of 5 Power) plus one round per 2 Power remaining. Perfect for getting a crew out quickly.
Soulphone Upgrade: Teleportal 2000 gp This soulphone upgrade, performed at an Outlet Store, allows you to use a regular portal to teleport to any location that is openly visible on the ATTN Maps app. Note that access is limited in Backwaters and limited to public spaces only. This does not use Power, as the portal functionality is built into the phone itself, although returning without a Portal set up requires Remote Portal Access functionality.
Soulphone Upgrade: Virtual Companion 2000 gp This soulphone upgrade, performed at an Outlet Store, gives your Soulphone a Virtual Companion, an artificial intelligence that lives within your soulphone and is likewise bonded to you. Their personality takes two weeks of frequent use to fully coalesce, but they are usually loyal and friendly to the owner of their 'phone, and are considered Proficient in Technology skill and technological items. If you decide that you are not satisfied with your Virtual Companion, you can pay 250 gp to have it replaced at an Outlet Store.
Soulphone Upgrade: Companion Summon 4000 gp This soulphone upgrade requires a Virtual Companion, and allows you to summon a hard-light version of your Virtual Companion to assist you. They are considered to have a level equal to half your level in a class or classes of their choice, and exist for one round per unit of Power in your phone. Accessories and Battery Packs can extend this time limit.
Soulphone Upgrade: Phone of Holding 200 gp This soulphone upgrade requires one week of downtime to complete the installations (or can be prepared on a replacement phone as part of the replacement costs.) It allows your phone to act as a storage outlet for items that will automatically sort similar items, pick up items by taking their picture and pressing the 'Take' button, and drop items by selecting them in the menu and pressing the 'Drop' button. There are additional features for Telepathic Access Functions users, allowing the user to drop specific items at a thought (these will land on the ground adjacent to the user, and the user can choose to drop one or all items of a specific type as a standard action, or a specific number of items as two standard actions or one full-round action.) The phone has a base max capacity of 100 lbs, and can store an additional 10 lbs in Private Memory Reserve per 1 Quad purchased.
Soulphone Upgrade: Phone of Banking 500 gp This special upgrade requires Phone of Holding. It allows you to immediately store and transfer monetary assets to a Bank of Alshira bank account, or withdraw up to 100 coins per minute; it also can transfer objects (up to the weight limit of the Phone of Holding) directly to resellers; this will generally garner roughly 20% of the item's true value, but is much better than lugging fifty pounds of steel bars back to town.
Network Upgrade: Private Memory Reserve 10 gp per Quad The standard soulphone is capable of storing 100 terabytes of data in local memory storage, and preserves a backup of this data in Private Memory Reserve on ATTN's central servers. For the user who needs more, one can store Quads of data (roughly equivalent to 10 terabytes of data or pounds of matter if using the Phone of Holding upgrade) on the ATTN Network for a cost of 10 gp per Quad; this additional data/matter storage is only available while connected to the Network.
Soulphone Accessory: Phone Battery Pack 20 gp This device is roughly the size of the soulphone, and clips directly to a port in its bottom edge. It provides an extra 20 units of power, and recharges its supply at the same rate the soulphone does, making it easy to recharge and useful in areas of low or no mana. It is especially useful when extending the use of Companion Summon, Emergency Exit, Remote Access or Instaportal.
Soulphone Accessory: Desktop Interface 100 gp This device allows a soulphone to be inserted and connected, and includes a screen, keyboard, and touch screen controls, allowing the soulphone to be used much like a laptop when desired. Desktop interface includes 100 units of Power and can also run on external power.
Soulphone Accessory: Companion Ring 1000 gp This magical device allows you to temporarily store your Virtual Companion, once summoned, without draining battery life, while allowing it to experience the sensations that you experience. While worn, you have an automatic telepathic connection to your Virtual Companion that cannot be broken. If the ring is removed from your finger, the Virtual Companion is automatically dismissed.
Soulphone Accessory: Carrying Brace 20 gp A lightweight but sturdy brace for your wrist that allows you to carry and access your phone easily.
Soulphone Accessory: Decorative Case 50 gp For a nominal fee, an Artifacts and Crafts outlet can print out a custom protective case for your device. This not only looks pretty, but provides resistance to physical damage to the phone. Case breaks after 10 HP damage.
Soulphone Accessory: Armored Case 200 gp For a slightly higher fee, a phone can be built within a special impact-resistant case that renders it near impossible to damage normally while still being usable. Device is immune to nonmagical damage, and resistant to magical damage, while the case lasts. Case breaks after 30 HP damage.
Soulphone Accessory: Zoom Lens Attachment 100 gp This small device attaches to the front of the phone, over the camera, and allows the camera to zoom up to 20x (standard zoom without is 4x).
Soulphone Accessory: Projector Attachment 500 gp This small device plugs into the data port on the bottom edge of the phone, and allows the phone to broadcast holographic 2D or 3D displays (3D displays require 3D data, which must be recorded or created through other means.
Soulphone Accessory: Extreme Zoom Lens Attachment 500 gp This attachment is heavier than the phone, and takes up about half of the backside of the phone. However, it allows you to zoom up to 100x, sufficient for facial recognition at half a mile away or better, assuming the camera is properly supported on a tripod.
Soulphone Accessory: Interface Cable 10 gp An interface cable to connect the phone to other technological items, allowing for further usability options.
Soulphone Accessory: Phone Tripod 20 gp A lightweight three-pole stand device that comfortably holds and supports your phone, allowing you to use it to take steady pictures or movies.
Services: Replace My Phone 25% price of original A&C understands that your investment is precious. We also maintain a backup of your information on our central servers so that in the event your phone is destroyed, your replacement phone will lose less than one hour of data as long as your phone was in our coverage area. As such, we are pleased to offer a Replace My Phone plan that can replace a lost, blown, or destroyed phone for a payment of 25% of the original service package cost.
Datatab 10 gp This small tab (roughly the size of a thumbnail) plugs into the data port on the bottom of a soulphone, and stores 1 Quad (10 terabytes of data and/or 10 lbs of matter). More powerful Datatabs cost roughly 1.5x as much per doubling in capacity.

Reactive Mail Armor 2000 gp AC 13 + Dex modifier (max 2), provides resistance against slashing damage, any slashing hit causes a 5 foot cone of shrapnel to fire out of the armor (Dex save vs DC 15, 2d10 damage on a hit). Armor loses 1 AC per three bursts, becomes inert and requires repairs after 10 bursts. Medium armor.
Polymer Segmentata 4000 gp AC 15 + Dex modifier (max 2), DR 2 vs physical or radiant damage. However, its use as armor is limited. AC 13, heavy armor, move reduced by half, user is a High Mana field.

Item Descriptions

Soulphones

Soulphones are an intermarriage of technology and magic that are designed by the goddess of technology and owner/operator of the ATTN (Alshiran Teleportation/Telecommunications Network), Mekista Tinkerfingers. There are a number of things that a player should know regarding the difference between our world's cellphones and Arcydea's soulphones:

  • Each SoulPhone is psionically bonded to the user – this means that nobody else can use it but the owner without the owner's consent.
  • SoulPhones can communicate with each other anywhere where an ATTN signal reaches (which includes most aboveground places on the planet as long as mana is at least normal; low mana or obstructions will make this more problematic and give chances of failure or limited operation.)
  • SoulPhones have a battery. This is mostly irrelevant since as long as you're in a normal mana area the phone will slowly recharge over time (roughly sixteen hours to charge from empty in a normal-mana environment), but some SoulPhone upgrades use units of power. A Soulphone has ten units of power by default; it uses one unit of power per hour of active operation in a normal-mana environment and regains one unit of power per two hours of downtime.
  • For recharging faster, SoulPhone 'charging stations' are shrines and temples, as well as sanctified casters to a lesser extent. Being within 30 feet of a divine caster increases the charge rate to one unit per 90 minutes; being within 30 feet of a sanctified area increases the charge rate to one unit per 60 minutes; being within 30 feet of an Artifacts and Crafts store or a temple of Mekista increases charge rate to one unit per 30 minutes.
  • Technology use for items such as SoulPhones is done with the Technology skill, which can be learned with time. Without proficiency or familiarity, Technology skill checks are usually an Intelligence-based skill check.
  • Using this skill can give you information on navigation, information, and other useful details that would normally require another skill; they may also provide additional perspectives. They will always provide you with an answer, but that answer may not be right (especially if your skill roll is low.)

General Software

Software is purchased from the ATTN Store, and is bought using Shirans through the Bank of Alshira. Typically Shirans are valued at roughly 2 per gold piece, and are symbolized with a $.

Preinstalled Software

Program Cost Effects
NetChat Preinstalled This free program allows you to hold text, voice, or video conversations with other people assuming you have their number or a direct-connect code that can be generated by the program.
ATTNMap Preinstalled This free program provides a moderately detailed map of Arcydea, including cities, towns, villages, portal locations and major businesses of interest.
NexusConnect Preinstalled A program that lets you access the NexusNet databases, with information from Arcydea and beyond.
Camera Preinstalled Takes pictures and saves them to the phone's internal memory, for sharing or later reference. Camera has a 4x base zoom.

Useful Apps

Program Cost Effects
NexBook Free Of course there's a social networking app with a bad name on the phone, even though there's multiple other ways to communicate with others. Just… accept it and move on.
HerbDex Free Uses the phone's camera to try to identify herbs, identifying name and general properties. Also allows for plant lookup by name. (The HerbDex app gives you advantage on Nature checks specifically for identifying herb-sized plants; it won't really help you with most other applications of Nature.)
Survivall Free A basic encyclopedia of Survival suggestions for various climates. (The Survivall app allows you to use a Wis bonus of +2 instead of your own Wisdom bonus, or grants a +1 equipment bonus, when making Survival checks as long as you spend at least ten minutes studying the Survivall app.)
gold4loot Free (ads) or $100 gold4loot is a merchant service that offers evaluations of various things adventurers might find on their travels, giving them quotes on what gold4loot will pay for them. While gold4loot bids low, they bid consistently low (about 25% off 'best value'). Ads version requires 30 second ads which are particularly intrusive if you have Telepathic Access. If used with Phone of Banking upgrade, rates increase to about 30% of best value and does not require direct delivery.
badassometer Free (ads) or $50 A limited database of common monsters and their general challenge levels. Yes, this is effectively a way to peek in-game at a monster's challenge rating, and receive some basic information on it – if it matches in the database, as well as receive some hints should it be tougher or weaker than usual. Badassometer is supported by a community which provides their own opinions, though this takes more time than is feasible in combat.
badassometer-Nexbook $20 Evaluates a Nexbook profile to give a rough estimate of the end user's challenge levels, assuming they have a listing within Nexbook's voluminous database of individuals.
Wander Free The WhatsApp to NetChat's SMS messaging, Wander allows better text, voice, and video calling features, multiple group chats, etc.
Quill Free An email application for those who prefer their contacts remain less direct. ATTNMail is a common address, but businesses with tech presence may have vanity email addresses.
BoA Online Free The Bank of Alshira's online secure banking application, useful for making and receiving virtual currency transactions backed by Shirans (equivalent in value to electrum).
MapTools Basic Free with upgrade Part of the Adventurer phone upgrade, this application uses the phone's location and detection software to map the surrounding area.
BoA Professional $20 The Bank of Alshira's business package, this variant allows the user to make invoices and send them to contacts.
MapTools Plus $50 An upgrade to the Adventurer phone upgrade that allows you to manually edit maps, add your own notations, tag individual rooms, etc.
Livefeed Free (ads), $20 Paid, or $100 Professional A music app that gives access to music from around the Nexus. Paid version also allows you to load local music; Professional version allows you to publish your own music and possibly get royalty payments.
SpellBook $100 Load your spells onto this digital resource that is backed up as part of ATTN's phone backup service and never lose your spells to an errant fireball again! Copying spells from your personal spellbook to Spellbook requires 30 minutes per spell level and requires no money to accomplish; copying from a scroll or someone else's spellbook requires 1 hour per spell level and no money to accomplish.
Buildr $20 Organize construction projects and hire craftspeople directly using this handy app! (Note: hirelings obtained this way are not loyal expressly to you and must be paid for the duration of the project.)
Gazette $10 Maintain your newspaper subscriptions (typically $50 / year for a weekly subscription) and stay updated on current events in an area.
Drone Control Software $100

Educational Software

Note that Educational Software only provides you with an instructor and progresses at the same speed as self-study. Note that days-of-downtime only really exists in the Academy during times not spent in classes or extracurriculars (that is, weekends and breaks); however, a student can earn two hours of downtime per day by idly playing these phone games. Classes are special in that they may teach a skill or language or feat without requiring downtime. For more information on downtime, click here.

Program Cost Effects
FruitSmash $50 A very popular touchscreen game where you touch fruits to smash all connected fruit of the same type, to work your way through a druidic dungeon to rescue a prince. Allows you to study Wisdom in your downtime without a teacher. Similar games involving cause-and-effect relationship chains, forethought and careful planning have similar effects.
Virtual Arena $50 A program that requires the Telepathic Access Functions upgrade, and which allows you to conduct virtual practice fights when resting. You are considered to be sleeping while using the Virtual Arena, but within the Arena you can fight various standard monsters and practice your tactics and moves. Allows you to study Dexterity in your downtime without a teacher. Similar games include fitness and exercise programs, which do not require Telepathic Access Functions upgrades but are far less entertaining.
The Princess Saga $50 A complicated adventure game in which the protagonist is one of the land's eight princesses, and is attempting to rescue her fellow princesses and free the land from the dominion of the Shadow King. Allows you to study Intelligence in your downtime without a teacher. Similar games involving tactical planning, assessment, and quick wits have similar effects.
VirtualConstructor $500 Requires Virtual Companion, Telepathic Access Files, and Companion Summon upgrades; allows you to work on virtual machinery using real tools, allowing you to study a tool set in your downtime without a teacher, or to remotely access and manipulate physical machinery with Virtual Control Systems installed. The basic package costs $500 and includes carpentry, cobbling, leatherworking, weaving and woodcarving; packages for other tool sets requires $50 apiece, available separately.
NexTech Overview Free As many inhabitants of Nexus are not from the same general technological progression level, and sometimes not even the same path, this free overview allows people to study up on the differences in their own time to learn the Technology skill. Mind, you have to know how to use your phone to use it…
