Founded in 1927, 7-Eleven is a rare example of a corporate entity based around the model of convenience store franchising, as it has managed to remain competitive and successful despite rising costs, changes in fuel system markets, and the hazards of criminal behavior. Approximately 80% of the 120,000 7-Eleven stores in existence are franchises operated by individual local management, and it has stores in over 50 countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and Denmark.
Stores not operated as franchises often have better automated security features to protect workers and customers, and often have arrangements with local law enforcement; they have even sponsored specific local jurisdictions to the point where law enforcement vehicles have 7-Eleven advertising. Competing retail companies have taken notice of this and are engaging in similar practices in other markets.
It almost always pays to make friends with the convenience workers in a neighborhood, especially if it's your neighborhood. Friends will tell you when suits or badges have been asking about you, or will tell you if they know anything about other regulars who aren't as friendly. They also make a good place to stock up on snacks and drinks for a long stakeout or night's work. Just remember those places are full of cameras.
The 7-11 franchise corporation is surprisingly successful even though its primary target is in low-income sectors. Their supply methodology is efficient, and their ability to mesh with local environments without significant culture clash is impressive. Their active endorsement of law enforcement in particular is worth studying when considering similar ventures.
7-11 sells a variety of conveniences, marketed at roughly a 100% markup (or more) over standard prices - however, they are open at all hours, and if you really need a two-liter of soda, a bottle of cough syrup, shoelaces, and a UDT cable at 2 AM, they are always open. Many of them also supply basic vehicle maintenance and/or refueling needs.
