One interesting aspect of After the Dark is the ability to build your own fortresses within the wasteland. Fortresses serve a variety of purposes - giving you a place to rest and resupply, allowing you to conduct business with outsiders, and even letting you blockade areas that you don't want others passing through, if you're so inclined.
