Michael Malone was diagnosed in early childhood as having autism spectrum disorder, with severe emotional disturbances. He didn't speak until the age of six, and even after that, often remained locked in his own world.
His parents split up under the strain of raising him, and for a while his father had full custody. The problem became a major issue when Michael's internal world started to manifest externally. Unexplained fires, a babysitter who nearly choked to death, and other such incidents led to his father relinquishing custody to the state when Michael was 12.
Some arson incidents at the orphanage landed Michael in juvenile detention at the age of 16. There he caught the attention of a government worker who was looking for troubled youth that exhibited powers for a secret program.
Michael remained in government custody, where he was heavily medicated and studied. They carefully taught him to use his powers, molding him into an experimental (if volatile) weapon and recon asset.
Michael was turned over to a handler named Alexander 'Wolf' DeMarco. The two became close partners and lovers, and have developed a deep psychic bond.
When the Wolf's sister Tamara married Martin Grayson, and Martin started becoming politically active, they moved to Iowa to protect the couple (and also to keep an eye on the local situation for the government, as part of a special ops team).
