Background:

From a very young age, Jesse has been withdrawn. He is the only one who knows why, but he will not even tell his parents, because he knows they would send him to a shrink. He needed an outlet, and decided to write about it. He happened to leave his laptop on a counter, and when he got back, he saw his dad reading. He flinched slightly, but remained silent, waiting to see what his dad would think. After half an hour, Jesse grew bored and left.

Going to his room, and grabbing his note book, he continued where he had left off writing on his laptop. Three hours later, his dad knocked on his door. Surprised to see and feel that he was proud, Jesse told him to come in, but his dad only opened the door, set Jesse's laptop on his desk and asked, “Would you mind if I sent a copy of it to a contest?” Jesse agreed, and eventually the 11-year-old's story won the contest.

Gradually over the next four years, Jesse became more withdrawn. He had difficulty handling the tumult of emotions from his fellow teenagers, and recently stopped going to school, only attending swim team practices and the school newspaper that he edited for for as long as they would allow him to. However, the school has decided that they simply can't allow a 15-year-old to visit school property and not attend school, and has insisted Jesse's father take action. Henry offered his son the option of moving to live with family in Lake Harmony, or seeking psychological counseling. Jesse chose moving, as he felt no attachment to his home.
