Small Acts of Kindness: Companion Animal Care is a small clinic with two exam rooms, one surgical room, waiting room, storage room, small kennel, one office, and a diagnostics room. Painted in bright colors and with large front windows the decor is made to be welcoming and cheerful. Though the clinic is capable of caring for most animals that could come through the door, Abby's specialty is exotics and large animals. Abby often brings Rex and Domino to work with her where they sit in a large tree stand behind the main counter.
Abby has offered the services of her clinic to a couple local animal shelters and rescues in order to decrease their costs and increase their ability to care for and find homes for orphaned animals. Occasionally, she also travels to nearby farms for home visits; particularly for large animals and livestock.
She works tirelessly to promote conservation efforts and work to decrease animal abuse through awareness and no small amount of activism. She dislikes those who are unnecessarily cruel.
Abby grew up in a seemingly average Cleveland family. Her parents were very good at hiding their nature and her father had his ears surgically altered to appear human when she was still small. Her parents were not riders but knew enough of the lore to recognize the characteristics blooming in their daughter. With the likely extinction of their mounts, less and less riders have been born through the centuries. An Elven druid came to educate her when she was school age and continued until she left for college. She studied veterinary medicine at Ohio State University with a specialty in exotic and zoological medicine. She had an internship at the Cleveland Zoo and after was hired in their reptile and invertebrate department. She has been saving money for several years with the hopes of starting her own vet practice. When a building turned up in Lake Harmony, very cheap, and with some of the necessary equipment (it had been a human clinic previously) she couldn't pass it up. Abby has been in Lake Harmony for about 6 months and has just recently opened her practice. (She is still hiring support staff and will need more as the practice grows).
The lifespan of elves can be a long one if they avoid sadness and those physical things which can lead to their death. Though a much more durable race than humans, they still can succumb to traumas like gunshots, falls, and car accidents, among other things. However, they are nearly immune to most human aliments such as flu and other diseases. Elves can look as diverse as humans though it takes them far longer to show their age once they have matured.
Wing Riders are a type of elf whose true place is highly debated , even among the elves. Some believe them to be a separate race or subset of elves, others see them as simply normal elves imbued with a certain type of magic. No matter the belief, all Wing Riders are born in areas that sit on the coasts of large bodies of water. Legend says that coastal areas are where the mounts used to be found and so these places also attracted or produced Wing Riders. Traditionally, Wing Riders rode Rocs however, over time, many winged beasts including pegasi, wyverns, griffins, maticores, zburators, phoenix, and all manner of flying beasts became mounts. However, they still had a general affinity for the more bird-like mounts. In modern times, Wing Riders face the plight of our natural world acutely. Through the loss of wild spaces, or even extinction, no rider born in the past century or more has been able to find a mount. This leads to early death of the mountless rider.
As elves with magic, they can manifest any sphere of magic, though almost all Wing Riders are based in life magic. These magics allow them to heal others, commune with animals, bond with their mounts, and generally understand nature on an instinctual level. Wing riders are able to communicate with all manner of winged animals; from their giant mounts all the way to tiny insects. Magic for the Wing Rider starts out weak but with learning, experience, and practice their powers grow. It is rumored that the very eldest wing riders can bind souls to bodies that have recently died in order to give them time to heal the body and save the life.
