Guide to Wolf Taming

Wolf

A wolf is a type of mob that can be tamed and will follow pointing commands from its master. In the wild, wolves can be “tamed” by an alpha wolf which will direct the pack.

Taming, Feeding, and Hunger

To tame a wolf, use a meat food on it until you receive a prompt to name it. It will also play a heart animation. Wolves that have a living alpha can't be tamed. Each time a wolf is fed it gains 15 nutrition. A hungry wolf can also gain nutrition by eating dead mobs – gaining 45-60 nutrition per bite until well fed.

Well Fed (300+): The wolf will not eat dead mobs and has only a 30% chance of being turned aggressive by brute damage. If the wolf was aggressive, it will calm down. Pliable wolves start at 400 nutrition.

Hungry (251-300): The normal, neutral state.

Very Hungry (151-250): The wolf may attack non-packmates or the dead and eat. It will actively take the hunting stance. Feral wolves start at 250 nutrition.

Starving (150-): The wolf may attack its own packmates or alpha. It is hostile to everything.

Wolves passively grow hungrier over time while recovering from wounds (20 per 1-3 health until at least half healthy). Keep an eye on their nutrition after a fight!

Commanding Your Wolf

Wolves will respond to some basic commands if their alpha points at something. Note, wolves will not approach campfires even to chase a target.

Point at alpha: Follow alpha. Wolves may wander slightly but will stay within 7 tiles if possible.

Point at turf: Go to location and wait. The wolf will not wander in this stance.

Point at non-packmember: Attack.

Point at dead mob: Eat. (If not well fed)

You can examine a wolf to see its current objective (along with its health and hunger status).

Notes

Tamed wolves do not break stuff when wandering about. If their master dies however, they'll return to their destructive ways.

If you die and get cloned, you're no longer an Alpha to the wolf. Tread carefully when attempting to re-tame.
