Our researchers at NovusCorp are proud to announce that they have made advances in time-bluespace technology that allow them to peek into possible futures. This allows us to provide informative guides on the best ways to direct your scientific progress so that your personal future includes the best scientific developments, allowing you to upgrade your ship, develop new technologies, and make the best of your existence.
The Research System functions on Research Credits, which are earned gradually over time as researchers work, and are also earned (and are useful to) the following areas: Genetics, where Geneticists work on improving the bioroid genome; Chemistry, where Chemists work to figure out new chemicals and make existing ones; Xenology, where Xenoarchaeologists study artifacts of prior civilizations and make new discoveries and Xenobiologists study strange new lifeforms for unique chemical compounds; and R&D, where Scientists research new technologies by taking apart existing technologies and extrapolating the results, detonating bombs for science, or studying anomalies in spacetime. It's all very exciting and new, and promises to bring humanity (version two) to a new singularity of understanding and technology!
The Research Budget functions separately from Research Credits, although occasionally options exist to directly 'buy' research from cooperating merchant channels.
The Genetics system allows you to transform standard bioroids into all manner of furry, feathery, scaly, and otherwise different bioroids, providing unique advantages and disadvantages that make life more interesting for a diverse cast of creatures. In addition, alien life forms may find greater genomic expression through the benefits of scientific analysis and advancement.
Xenology focuses on the discovery of alien life not yet known (or poorly known), study of their culture and technology, communication with them when possible, and profit from the technological advancements thus developed. Of course, not all alien life is friendly or culturally oriented, which is why Xenology has strong connections to the Military.
Chemistry focuses on making breakthroughs in chemical synthesis and production to make miracle drugs, new weapons, and scientific advancements in other technologies. Even the basic chemicals known to science can perform miracles of modern technology; they just need proper analysis to determine safe usage, as many chemicals that can be used in the human body have overdose levels at which point they become harmful.
While not typically praised as its own form of science, Metallurgy is nevertheless an important part of research, developing new stable alloys to build new technologies. These are generally accomplished through the hard work of the Mining division, as well as the guiding hand of R&D in testing new alloys for stability and quality.
While any mechanic who's managed to acquire a device analyzer and ruckingenur kit can refabricate normally copyrighted designs and structures, technological understanding involves in part the proper analysis and study of existing technologies in order to extrapolate future developments (rather than paying shady tech dealers on the Rim to purchase normally copyrighted designs and structures at Rim-inflated prices), and a destructive analyzer. This builds Research Credits based on its technological principles towards unlocking Tech Tree nodes. Once a Tech Tree node is unlocked, more items become available and can be printed through the fabricators.
Thankfully, this is pretty easy. The easiest way to earn Research Credits is to deconstruct an item by placing it in the destructive analyzer. Using the console next to the deconstructive analyzer, activate it to deconstruct the item and hopefully expand the database’s understanding of its relevant technologies. (You can also eject items from the analyzer using the same console, should you change your mind.)
Items can only provide Research Credits towards certain items. You can see whether an item will contribute Research Credits (and to what) by looking at it when you've equipped science goggles.
Toxins or Ordnance is an area in the science wing, usually split up into an office, storage area, laboratory, and launch area. The scientists in this wing are responsible for safely completing explosive experiments, creating discounts, research points, and credits for the research department.
Of course, blowing things up is a long-enjoyed pastime of Ordnance Technicians and Scientists, but science is done by bringing your explosives, once created successfully without blowing oneself up, to the Virtual Testing Range, where the weapon can be run through the explosives analyzer and will spit out data on the destructiveness matrix (how big a bang it produces, how hot, etc), giving Research Points as well as confirming the destructive potential of the weapon thus created. Make sure your Ordnance Technicians start building these weapons en masse and deploying them to the Military as soon as possible, or working on bigger and better bangs for science and military dominance!
Spatial anomalies occasionally occur on your trip through space, but these aren’t just random misfortunes; they can be studied by Scientists! Anomalies outside of the ship can be studied with the DRADIS scanner system, or analyzed with probe torpedoes to gain more information about the type of anomaly and hopefully providing Research Credits.
Some anomalies may appear inside the ship itself; these require more work, and they present an active hazard to the ship if left alone, most of the time. Scanning them with an analyzer will tell you what you need to do to neutralize the anomaly; the simplest anomalies can be neutralized with a signal broadcast at a specific frequency, while others may need to have something inserted or removed from the anomaly. Success results in the anomaly collapsing on itself, providing an anomaly core that can be analyzed at leisure by Scientists and put to use in special projects.
Construction of a Spatial Interdictor allows some anomalous events to be averted or forestalled, giving additional time to take precautions or action to prevent harm, and generates Research Credits when an anomaly is occurring (even anomalies that cannot be turned into cores.)
Did you know that Radiation Collectors, as well as the large Particle Scoop attached to some research ships, are capable of performing quantum science research? Wonder no longer, and switch its traditional plasma field matrix over to further the bounds of scientific understanding! In order for this to work one requires a mix of Tritium and Oxygen in the matrix tanks, which are used up more rapidly than plasma but generates valuable Research Credits for science!
Any scientist can choose to focus the research computers on a particular goal in the predicted tech tree. This puts the research computers into an intensive series of virtual reality simulations to test the applications and possible sources of targeted future developments and how they may work in our dimension's reality. These advances are accelerated by greater understanding of the fundamentals of how things work (known as Research Credits), which are obtained through the various methods disclosed here. This means that by figuring out, for example, the fundamental principles behind how a health scanner works, you can better understand the technology behind it to advance medical research.
The research system contains tech trees that are each related to a guiding principle of scientific advancement (for example, material science unlocks innovations in conservation of resources - making tech with less material waste - and stronger materials such as new alloys and entirely new discoveries in material science.) The fastest way to accelerate development is through analysis, but there are other ways, such as finding research or researchable artifacts from other civilizations, buying it from other outlets and resources, or having a eureka moment when actively researching.
The currently known scientific paths are listed below. Note that scientists may discover new paths that are not on this list, in which case they will appear properly in your research tree once discovered.
Advances in material science allow for greater understanding of known materials as well as the discovery of new synthesis techniques for generating materials from energy and existing matter.
The development of new computer and artificial intelligence and data storage systems. Used for circuit boards and many artificial intelligence items. Governs compression technology and data storage technology, allowing for more capacity in a single memory bank, disk, or drive. Also enables faster decryption and better protection from viruses.
Advances in power storage allow for more efficient storage of energy in power cells and SMES cells, while power generation advancements allow for improvements in engine design. Helping with things related to power such as recharging, storing power or items that use power. There are many items such as batteries that can make this higher.
This development allows for SMESes to have automatic power capturing. This causes them to dynamically set their inputs based on the power available. It is likely to be imperfect at first, but should improve with enough study. SMESes on the same power channel will set their outputs equally and divide the available power more effectively as developments in Power Regulation ensue.
Expands knowledge of power storage tech so that larger power cells, capacitance banks, and SMES disks are available.
Improve efficiency of solar panels when in space, in atmosphere, and when using radiative cooling thermocoupling.
Improves power gain from temperature differential and lowers the amount of heat transfer between loops.
Better stabilization of singularities and better information regarding current status.
Improved safe delamination of supermatter crystal, safer handling capabilities, augmentation of crystals, and higher power output.
The development of offensive and defensive systems. As the name suggests, unlocks various weapons. All kinds of weapons can improve this technology.
Development of new and improved engineering techniques. Needed to produce some complex machines for the station. Genetics, being bio-engineering, can help with this.
Research into the deeper mysteries of life and organic substances. Needed for items and machines related to medicine or biological items, such as cybernetic implants.
More on this as it develops.
Research into the mysterious substance colloquially known as plasma as well as other chemicals. Required for chemistry related and high-tech items. Mostly obtainable from items related to plasma or specific rare chemical compounds.
Research into the sub-reality known as “blue-space”. Unlocks both high-tech components and teleportation technology.
Research into the electromagnetic spectrum. No clue how they actually work, though. Many items related to electricity and magnets need this technology. Get it higher for some fun electric toys.
The study of technologies developed by other federations and corporations, some of which may contravene galactic law. Some developments unlock some reverse-engineered traitor items to help the station.
Pardon the pun here, but the mechanics aboard your vessel are not mere laborers that fix things (although like any engineer, they certainly know how to.) Mechanics are employed to examine the world around them (your ship) and help train the computers in the mechanics of how things work. They utilize this using several special gadgets - the device analyzer, the destructive analyzer and the reverse-engineering system.
As might be surmised, the device analyzer allows you to scan a piece of technology and get a general synopsis of how it works and is put together. It may require scans of many different examples of that technology (other health analyzers, for instance) in order to gain a fuller picture, but every scanned object puts you that much closer to a scientific breakthrough.
Another way to advance the cause of science is to hand over an item to a destructive analyzer, which takes the item apart at the molecular level to completely analyze its internal and external structure as well as better calculate how that object may work. Although this is the best way to get scientific data from a particular object, it is advised that this not be performed on irreplacable items if at all possible. Artifacts, in particular, are generally one-of-a-kind xenoarchaeological or otherwise acquired pieces of advanced technology that may not be replicable depending on your research system's current understanding of the concepts that make it function, and some items are particularly resistant or even violently opposed to being examined in this manner, so be ye duly warned when you plan to work with these materials.
With all of this said, a destructive analyzer will also supply you with the raw materials that made up the original object, minus some waste (again, depending on your level of scientific advancement, particularly in Material Science) based on the efficiency of the destructive analyzer, as well as a greater understanding of the item and how to reconstruct it. Your first health analyzer might not give you enough information to rebuild it using the Protolathe, but further research will, never fear.
The RES takes the data output by device analyzers, destructive analyzers, and currently known research and compiles it into the research database. It will inform you of whether you have made a scientific advancement, have sufficiently analyzed it to replicate it, or mastered replication of an item. Items that are not mastered may have bugs or malfunctions that may take some practical research to detect; toss your broken new gadgets into the destructive analyzer to have it attempt to determine what is going wrong and why. For inherently unsafe materials such as weapons and explosives, it may be best to put them through the analyzer until it says the tech has been mastered, just because you don't want soldiers or security working with faulty equipment, and the research lab is generally better when it hasn't been blown up.
It should be noted that the Reverse-Engineering System itself, and both analyzers, can be analyzed for improvements and upgraded with improved parts once you have advanced technology sufficiently, allowing greater efficiency, better research gains, and less wasted materials. It never hurts to check your database to see what items have been analyzed and what items are suggested for repeat analysis now that your understanding has grown.
The Xenoarchaeologist would be proud to know that his work in the field has benefits not just to understanding of past and present cultures, but occasionally towards the advancement of science. Items from lost civilizations are commonly referred to as 'artifacts', relics that have inscrutable functionality that must be researched in order to understand their function. A full treatise on xenoarchaeology is available in Kalvin Frost's Guide to Xenoarchaeology, but the abbreviated version is that xenoarchaeologists search the field and dig hoping to find relics of the past, and some of those relics are complicated enough to be known as 'artifacts'. (In most cases, items such as bowls and cups aren't advanced enough to promote research, but there may be exceptions, such as bowls made out of advanced materials!) These artifacts are then returned to the ship, where Scientists study them in the Artifact Lab to hopefully figure out how they work. While device analyzers may not provide conclusive information at first, they may help Scientists by providing advice on what techniques to do and not do for safe operation. The PDA Device Analyzer App (with analyzer attachment) is ideal for this purpose as any scientist can attach it to their PDA and use it without borrowing the Mechanic's own analyzers for this purpose, or if you know how, you can make as many analyzers as you need by storing the blueprints on a data disk and installing them into any autolathe.
Sometimes money is the answer to scientific discovery, in that you can buy technological understanding from other ships and other cultures that may have had their own private developments. Although they will not always offer it, should an opportunity arise to purchase research, the Research Director is responsible for signing off on any such purchases and evaluating their effective value to your ship. (Just because it's expensive doesn't make it worthwhile!)
Scientists can actively pursue research in a particular field using a computer connected to the Research database, which will provide a boost to the rate at which the Research system generates research data. In addition, the perspective of different researchers may provide a eureka moment - a sudden jump in research gained from a researcher's solving of previously unsolvable problems with existing science. In extremely fortunate circumstances, a researcher may even make a Scientific Breakthrough, a discovery that completes a tech tree or tech level advancement or discovers an entirely new branch of science.
R&D (not to be confused with the Research Director) consists of scientists experimenting on individual objects they find in the ship's travels by putting them in the Destructive Analyzer, which reverse-engineers and disintegrates the object, or Device Analyzer, which does slightly less reverse-engineering in exchange for not annihilating your precious toys. The R&D console will allow you to then use the technology from deconstructed objects to build more advanced and efficient versions of the original object, and even new tools such as laser cannons!
Essentially this means that a scientist in this modern world doesn't actually have to know any of the concepts he's working with; it's all about pressing buttons, scanning things, and playing with the resulting toys! Ain't life grand?
Note that this guide is just mostly about what type of technology different items are. There are many, many ways to do R&D properly, and they may vary as technology advances overall.
Deconstruction is done through the Destructive Analyzer:
The computer will show you the overall tech levels of the item. Items with the same level in a category will raise the tech level of that category slightly. Items with higher tech level will raise the tech level of that category moderately, or significantly if the difference is greater than 2. It is possible to eject items from the Destructive Analyzer, if needs be, before they are scanned.
The Destructive Analyzer will recover a portion of the materials contained inside scanned items and transfer it to a connected protolathe. Upgrading it will increase the amount recovered.
Items processed via Deconstruction or Analysis will feed technical information to the Reverse-Engineering System, which accomplishes two things:
The Tech Web is a visual demonstration of what technologies require previous technologies to develop. A technology can never be at a higher level than ANY of its predecessors (example: Neural Programming cannot be higher than Data Theory or Biological Technology.)
The NovusCorp standard tech suite is provided at the beginning of every shift, although if all R&D is lost it can be researched again if necessary.

See here how to build machines out of the components you discover. This is where advanced technology you discovered by increasing tech trees will be made. Nothing exciting at first can be built, but you will get increasingly more fun devices as tech trees increase. You will unlock items for the Exosuit Fabricator as well.
All machines are composed of components. There are better versions of many components, attained through research. They are organized in 4 tiers, and upgrading the tier of a machine's components will have different effects for each machine.
Without minerals, you can achieve up to tier 2-3; to go further you'll require ores for production.
{| class=“wikitable” style=“text-align:center; background:#DDDDDD;” width=“100%”

Once you unlock advanced components, people around the station will probably want you to upgrade the machinery. The process is simple.
# Screwdriver on the machine. # Crowbar on the machine. # Take the board and re-insert it into machine. # Insert parts you want to use. # Screwdriver.
RPED.gif Alternately, you can use 'RPED (Rapid Part Exchange Device)
':
# Load RPED with parts. # Screwdriver on the machine. # Click on it with RPED. # Screwdriver again.
Here you can see how the specific machines will benefit from parts.
* The Protolathe requires materials such as metal, glass and mineable minerals, each sheet gives 2000 units when inserted into a Protolathe. It allows you to build objects such as stock parts, mining equipment, power cells and many more. Weaponry can also be built, but will require a firing pin from the armory, the RD's locker or ordered from cargo, if you wish to use it for combat.
* Building 5 or 10 of the same item is faster than building it one at a time for 10 times; if you need lots of a particular item, mass produce them! * Some items may also require chems. Just pour them into the Protolathe to insert them.

* The Circuit Imprinter requires acid, glass and occasionally gold or diamond. Here you will find circuits for most of the station's machinery and robotics' exosuits. With gold and diamonds, you can also make AI law modules. * Information on how to construct machines is available at the Guide to advanced construction. * Circuits cost 1000 glass and 20 acid each, becoming cheaper with upgrades.

Player XDTM posted an RnD guide on the forums that is very popular among experienced scientists. Here it is:
Start - Gather and scan these materials from the RnD room * Analyzer * Micro Manip * Capacitor * Welder * Flamethrower ( with another welder; just screwdriver it then attach a rod )
Alternate Start (if you can't be assed to make a flamethrower/want to keep a welding tool just in case. I use this one now) * Analyzer * Micro Manip * Capacitor * Welder * Meson Goggles * Toolbox
Protolathe - We don't need circuits till a lot later, don't waste acid * Mining Drill * Nano Manip * Mass Spectrometer * Medical HUD * Security HUD * Super power cell * Holographic sign projector * Adv. Mass Spectrometer * Adv. Release Grenade * Welding Shield Eyes —> Mat 5 –>Picos and Super Bins
With this you can make pico manips and super matter bins. Print an RPED, some picos and some super bins and upgrade your protolathe and circuit imprinter, greatly reducing the part cost. Do this before printing circuits or you'll waste acid!

Remember that with only a bit of silver you can build an autocloner thanks to phasic scanners and a bluespace RPED; if you're a miner reading this guide please deliver the two pieces that you see near the mining dock before leaving to mine!
When getting some high level parts (like anomaly cores) it will bring the tech to the item level (not item level+1) so, if possible, try to get to the item's level first, but it's acceptable to consume an anomaly since it'll usually land you on the max.
Destructive Analyzer The destructive analyzer is located in Research and Development along with the R&D Console, the Circuit Imprinter, Protolathe. To use it, simply put a viable item into the destructive analyzer and turn it on via the R&D console. Remember, this destroys the item! Not all items are viable and there is nothing to gain from taking them apart.
Viable research items can be found everywhere, including your lab. Research points will only go up one at a time, and only if the item being deconstructed is of the current research level or higher. The higher research levels you have, the more things available to make in the protolathe and circuit imprinter!

Research & Development Research and Development is done in the R&D lab in the upper right corner of the Science Department. There are 10 different types of technology that can be researched (and one special type that acts differently from the rest), each with multiple levels. Higher levels unlock more useful (and dangerous) prototypes.
Deconstruction The Deconstructive Analyzer, or DA, is the workhorse of the R&D lab. To raise tech levels, jam things into it and use the console to break them open. This destroys the item, and boosts research levels when appropriate.
Deconstructing items has the effect of raising your research levels, in the methods as follows:
If you are far below the item's research levels, it will give the item's (tech level - 1). Important note: This can raise your research levels by more than one. If you are at the item's (tech level - 2) up to (tech level), you will receive one tech level Therefore the maximum research level you can receive from an item is its (tech level + 1) How to Git'r Done Theoretically, R&D is supposed to involve experimentation, uncertainty, and excitement.
In reality though, it's basically the same thing every time. There's many different formulas out there, most of which are different at the lowest and highest ends of research. Here are a few examples.
No Robotics, No Miners, Metal and Glass Only, Final Destination For this method, you never need to leave Research and Development to complete research. You won't need to have any other assholes to help you either. It takes a bit longer then when you have other help, but this is the best method if you're just starting the shift.
1. Suit up. Get on a toolbelt, grab a toolbox, and put all the tools except the analyzer on it. Grab a nearby cable coil and put that on your toolbelt too.
Throw the Atmospheric Analyzer in the DA and scan it (Electromagnetic 2, Engineering 2). Then throw the empty toolbox in the DA and scan it as well (Combat 2). 2. Load up the machines. Grab the glass and metal on a nearby table and put 20-30 metal sheets in the protolathe, and 10-20 glass in the protolathe. Put 10 glass in the circuit imprinter, and pour the small beaker of acid on top of the imprinter into the imprinter. If you want, throw the rest of the metal and glass in the autolathe. You'll want a little bit of metal on hand for a later step though.
3. Print out the following items from the protolathe (use the computer) and scan them in the DA. Most of this can actually be found right in the room, but it's faster to print them all at once then to run around the room for it. You don't have to scan every item as soon as you print it, you can print the whole list in one go and scan them later if you want.
Micro-Manipulator (Materials 2, Data 2) Tracking Beacon (Bluespace 2) Basic Power Cell (Power 2) Roll of Gauze OR Ointment (Biological 2) Optical Meson Scanner (Electromagnetic 3, Engineering 3) These will get your research up to basic levels. Don't forget to sync the servers often (in the settings menu on the computer) so that the Roboticists and Mechanics aren't bitching at you constantly.
4. Now you've unlocked a fair bit more things to research. Print the following out and scan it too (in no particular order):
High Power Micro Laser (Electromagnetic 4) Global Positioning System (Bluespace 3) Personal Artificial Intelligence Card (Data 3) (print another one for yourself if you want a silicon friend) High Capacity Power Cell (Power 3) 5. The stuff you'll be able to build is going to start getting smaller now, as you'll need proper materials to build everything. Fear not, however, all you need to complete research is metal and glass, and stuff you can find in the room. Build and scan this stuff next:
Advanced Reagent Scanner (Electromagnetic 5, Biological 3) Mining Drill (Materials 3, Power 4) 6. You're almost out of things to build in the Protolathe. But keep going! Scan this stuff next:
Advanced Matter Bin (Materials 4) Super Capacity Power Cell (Power 5) Man Machine Interface (Biological 4) 7. Your glorified point-and-click adventure is almost done. You just need the following three:
Nanopaste (Materials 5, Engineering 4) Radio-Enabled Man Machine Interface (Biological 5) Super Matter Bin (Materials 6) 8. Now that you're out of things to build in the Protolathe, you'll be forced to make circuit boards to complete research. Unfortunately, the circuit imprinter needs sulfuric acid to make boards. Fortunately, you should be able to make your own Chemistry Dispenser with all the research you've done! Print two Chemistry Dispenser boards in the Circuit Imprinter menu on the computer. You are now out of acid, but soon enough you'll have more. Throw one of the Chemistry Dispenser circuit boards in the DA and scan it (Data 4, Biological 6, Engineering 5). Grab 5 sheets of metal and find an empty spot you won't be standing in anytime soon (above the protolathe or in a corner is always good). Click on the metal with it in your selected hand. A menu should pop up. Select “Build Machine Frame”. Use cable coil on the machine frame. Use the Chemistry Dispenser board on the frame. Print out 2 Nano Manipulators, 3 High Power Micro Lasers, and 2 Advanced Scanning Modules and use them on the frame. Grab a console screen that's on one of the tables to the right and use that on the frame, or make one from the autolathe. Use a screwdriver on the frame and it should be built. You can now throw a beaker in the chem dispenser and get all the sulfuric acid you need for boards. Load up at least 70 acid in the imprinter before continuing.
9. Print out the following boards and scan them to get the research you want:
Teleporter Generator (Data 5, Bluespace 4) 3x Durand (or Gygax) Weapons and Targeting Control Module (Combat 3, 4 and 5) 10. Head back to the protolathe and print and scan these to finish research:
Bluespace Matter Bin (Bluespace 5) 2x Hyper Capacity Power Cell (Power 7) Radio-isotope Thermoelectric Cell (Power 8) 11. DON'T FORGET TO SYNC THE SERVERS. If your lose power or your computer (somehow) and you never sync'd, you just wasted all your time because you'll be back at square one once you are able to get R&D working again. If you DID remember to sync and somehow lost your computer, just sync again and you'll be where you left off!
12. (OPTIONAL) Run down to Xenobiology and steal the plasma there if it hasn't already been grinded and scan two bars. Throw the rest in the protolathe and make a plasma cutter. Scan that too.
Congrats, research is now done as far as you or anyone else needs to care. Not that you can actually build anything decent without materials from mining, but if they haven't already brought you materials, now is a good chance to bitch at them to do so. Or go do it yourself because you can't expect anyone else to get work done, can you? Method 2: The Robotics Kickstart: Research For Robots Do you have access to the Exosuit fabricator? Is there anybody that does and is not braindead? Good, because they can give you a little hand to make this whole thing easier.
1. Ask them to make 3 Mech syringe guns. No prior research needed. Throw all three in the DA. (Materials 4, Biological 5, Electromagnetic 5, Data 4)
2. Just from those syringe guns, you have already maxed about half of all research. The rest is cake.
Grab an Atmospheric Analyzer from one of the blue toolboxes and scan it in the DA (Engineering 2). Then throw the toolbox in as well (Combat 2). Alternatively, you can make three Ultra AC 2 guns from the Exosuit fabricator, this will get you to (Combat 4). 3. Print the following items from your Protolathe and scan them:
Basic Power Cell (Power 2) Tracking Beacon (Bluespace 2) High Capacity Power Cell (Power 3) Global Positioning System (Bluespace 3) Mining Drill (Power 4, Engineering 3) Nanopaste (Materials 5, Engineering 4) Super Matter Bin (Materials 6) 5. Now it's time to build yourself a Chemistry Dispenser to get some sulphuric acid. You can just ask Medbay for some, but chances are you're going to make a Chemistry dispenser at some point anyways. Alternatively, you can drag the chem dispenser from xenoarchaeology into RnD to save you resources.
6. Got your acid? Good, now load up your circuit imprinter with acid and glass. Print these circuit boards and scan them:
Teleporter Generator (Data 5, Bluespace 4) SMES Board (Engineering 5, Power 5) (Can be substituted by a Super-Cap Power Cell and nobody will ever notice Engineering is not maxed) 3x Durand (or Gygax) Weapons and Targeting Control Module (Combat 3, 4 and 5). 7. Head back to the protolathe and print and scan these to finish research:
Bluespace Matter Bin (Bluespace 5) 2x Hyper Capacity Power Cell (Power 7) Radio-isotope Thermoelectric Cell (Power 8) 8. That's it, you're done, high fives all around I'm sure. Make sure to sync you son of a bitch.
Method 3: The Lone Mechanic Who Gives A Damn On This Station So you're a Mechanic and R&D doesn't exist or just won't get off their square asses. Never fear: You can set up an R&D station all for yourself, and you have access to some shiny bits that can make doing someone else's job a bit easier on you.
1. Right as you leave your doorstep, straight ahead is Tech Storage. In here you'll find a lot of circuit boards, more importantly, a Destructive Analyzer circuitboard. Nab that thing and skitter to your office, it's yours now.
2. Build a machine frame and jam in that circuit board. You can print the parts needed to construct the Destructive Analyzer from your Protolathe, then when it's done, go to your R&D console and re-sync with nearly devices. Now you can do exactly the same thing those science nerds should have already been doing!
3. Now of course, you're a busy man and probably behind schedule, so you're going to want to speed things up. South from Tech Storage is Telecomms: surprise, you have access there! Disable the turrets and waltz straight through to Telecomms Storage, where you'll find a lot of weird bits. You're going to want to pick these things up and stow 'em in the Destructive Analyzer, in this order:
3x Subspace Ansible 1x Subspace Transmitter If you're a nerd and want 5 Data Theory, 1x Hyperwave Filter Of course, since you're a responsible guy, you're going to replace these gadgets later when research is done… right? Of course. Absolutely.
4. Once that's done, your research numbers should be looking pretty good! However, you're still missing Engineering, Power, and Biological.
For engineering, thankfully you also have access to some other important research items, namely: Your own device analyzers! These things have a high Engineering research level, so just throw 'em in, don't think twice.
3x Device Analyzer (If you really, really don't want to deconstruct your device analyzers, the circuitboards from Telecomms storage will also work. But seriously, replace 'em afterwards.)
5. However, that only bumped up Engineering. For Power, build the following items in your Protolathe and scan them individually:
Basic Power Cell High-Capacity Power Cell 2x Super-Capacity Power Cell 6. And for Biological:
Roll of Gauze / Ointment (Use whichever) Health Scanner HUD Man-Machine Interface Radio-enabled Man-Machine Interface 7. That's it! We're done here. Everything you're going to need is maxed out. Remember to sync!
…What's that? Combat? You can max that by scanning an empty toolbox, then printing and scanning three Durand weapon module circuitboards. But hey, you didn't do all this research just to churn out five dozen advanced energy guns, right?
Right?
Method 4: For The Miner Who Has To Do Everything Themselves Because fuck those scientist assholes. You bring them all this shiny ore and they can't even be fucked to even start research. If all you want is a diamond drill and everyone else can go fuck themselves, this is the guide for you.
Wrench Basic Power Cell High-Capacity Power Cell Mining Drill Advanced Matter Bin Nanopaste Get Ye Drill And if you want a bag of holding to go with it:
Tracking Beacon Bluespace Beaker Stasis Beaker Get Ye Bag Illegal research Raising illegal research levels allows you to make AI T.Y.R.A.N.T law modules (from level 2), chem sprayers, decloners, energy crossbows, and illegal cyborg upgrades (from level 3), and the Chemical Mask and SOP-6“ Clusterbang” mech grenade launcher (at level 5).
The cheapest way to get illegal research done without using any Syndicate items is as follows:
There are two suspicious looking toolboxes that spawn in space and will get you to level 2. The tesla energy relay constructed in Robotics can also take you to level 2. A second one will get you to level 3. From there, just make and deconstruct Chem Sprayers, which will bring you up to level 6. Enjoy your potentially criminal doodads and/or save the telecrystals you would have spent otherwise. Nanotrasen Experimental Research This particular branch of research is special. It can't be raised by deconstructing items, and in fact doesn't even show up on the tech list in the R&D Consoles at first. Instead, you need to order a RnD Experimental Crate from Cargo; it contains a data disk containing the first (and so far only) level of Experimental Technology, along with a reference list to what the other requirements for the techs it unlocks are.
Anomaly Research Anomaly research mainly allows you to make more advanced cyborg upgrades and xenoarchaeology tools. Anomaly 4 gives the advanced digsite locator, making it MUCH easier to find large artifacts. Anomaly 5 provides the Saraposa counter that gives the distance to the closest artifact, making it again much easier. Miners usually leave valuable source of anomaly research in the ground so make sure to harass them into bringing any xenoarch trash they may find with them.
To raise anomaly research you should start with small artifacts, then you can use large artifact reports to finish it off.
Artifact 1:
Random trash Urns Artifact 2:
Alien/Human remains Any gun Any stock part Ball hugborg Cult blades Cult robes Glow orbs Roulette revolver Sash Sleepy pen Toys Artifact 3:
Crystals Strange beacon Artifact 4:
Chaos blade Cursed dice Soul stone Strange masks Artifact 5:
Large artifact HDDs (from scanning the artifact in the research outpost) If you manage to get your hands on glowsticks, two of them can be used to boost your anomaly to 3.
Being Helpful Items made in the protolathe can be extremely useful to crewmembers around the station. These are just a few examples of what you may be asked for.
Medbay can work miracles with the advanced surgical tools, plus there's the chance YOU might need surgery, so they're usually the top priority for helpful scientists. In rough order of importance: Surgical Incision Manager > Bone Mender > Laser Scalpel »> Precision Grasper > C.L.O.T. »> Mobile Operating Table (M.O.T) »> Plasma Saw »»»» Diamond Surgical Drill (only make this one as a joke). Medbay can also make good use of advanced reagent scanners and advanced trauma/burn kits. Make yourself a trauma and burn kit for your box for maximum robust points. Miners want diamond drills. ALWAYS give them one, they bring science the materials it needs! Roboticists want nanopaste and cyborg analyzers (make them as early as possible, they're very cheap and useful). Botanists want a floral somatoray. The Clown and the janitor want a chemsprayer (but don't ever give them one). Engineers want bags of holding, as does everyone else. Advanced Silicate Sprayers will be helpful for them too. Security and the Marines want all sorts of guns. Load up on Ablative Armor, Advanced Energy Guns Advanced energy gun conversion kits, and other more exotic weapons until you make the Armory's stocks look like pea shooters! Declare Science independent! Be the hero nobody wants (or the antagonist the station doesn't need)! Chemists want bluespace and stasis beakers, and some might be interested in the Chemical Packs, Large Grenades and EX Grenades you can make. The janitor wants his janicart upgraded. Mechanics would appreciate a Rapid Part Exchange Device. Make sure they upgrade your machines in exchange, of course. You can make a fully functional copy of about any machine or computer on the station. Build a spare AI upload in case shit goes south (or to upload some hilarious fucking laws), build a chemistry lab, cryo and cloning equipment for your own wild ride, build emergency telecomms, and so on.
A good way to reduce construction times by is to set protolathe to print enormous amounts of micro-lasers, scanning modules, micro manipulators and capacitors when it's not in use. Use satchels found on the table in R&D to store the tiny parts, stock up on a few console screens and you'll be able to build any machine (except the more advanced stuff) in no time.
And Byond Research levels go significantly higher than the base “max research” that roboticists need. It's almost never needed, unlocks barely any recipes at all and involves deconstruction of some really expensive items.
Phazon sheets can get you to Materials 10. Phase arrays constructed in robotics can give Materials 10, AND bluespace 10. You need at least 9 on both for PHAZON boards. Deconstructing plasma sheets can get you to Plasma 3, a PACMAN generator board can get you to Plasma 4. A bag of holding can get you to Bluespace 5. A combat shotgun can get you to Combat 6. Traitor items can get you to a very high Illegal research level. Prayers and sacrifices can get you to the absolute maximum. Construction The following is a table of all the items that Science can print out, as well as their research levels. The items can be printed out at either the Protolathe, Circuit Imprinter, or the Exosuit Fabricator.
