Born in New York City, Tamara and her brother Alex were raised in a close knit family. Their parents still run a pizza parlor in Queens.

Tamara met Martin when she was in college and he came to the art showing she had there. He had been on town in business, and for a while they carried on a long distance relationship.

When he asked her to marry him, she agreed to move to Iowa, which was a big change of pace for her from the city.

When Martin got elected, she begged her brother and his partner to come to Iowa to serve as his personal bodyguards and keep him safe.
